Electric Shock Drowning

Mike here. There has always been a fear in the back of my mind when diving around boats and piers of being electrocuted while underwater. The reason for this fear is I almost was. I was diving around an old dock searching for a rifle. The dock had a boat house and had an outside light system. I made my approach from shore underwater and as I got closer to the dock, I felt a mild electrical current hit my body. It was not enough to hurt me, but enough to get my attention. I immediately went back the way I came and after a short distance could no longer feel the electricity. I surfaced and told everyone about what I felt and we aborted the search and notified those that controlled the dock. I drove away that day considering myself lucky, but over the years I have read several stories about those who were not so lucky. So, to give you a little insight to something we should always be aware of when responding to drownings or when searching around areas that have electrical power, here is something I put together from a number of different sources:
